Create Artificial Healthy Lighting

Capture the power of natural light in your next lighting design

Tunable white boards are the latest trend in LED technology adopted by Architects and Designers to promote wellness.

As human beings, we maintain our overall wellbeing through homeostasis – that’s the body’s natural optimal state and it spends every moment of every day working to achieve it. For this, you have your hypothalamus to thank. It’s a small portion of your brain that sends out signals via the endocrine and nervous system to control numerous systems within your body that when working together, will achieve homeostasis.

One of the systems is your circadian rhythm – the mental, physical and behavioural state you experience at different times throughout the day. While we each have our own slightly varying natural circadian rhythm, your hypothalamus will release melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy) based on the light levels registered by your optic nerve. This is important not only so you sleep during the night, but so you are alert during the day.

Research shows that we are spending more time indoors than ever before. This restricts our exposure to natural light and as a result, can have negative impacts on our circadian rhythm contributing to obesity, depression, bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder and numerous sleeping disorders. With user wellness being a major focus for an increasing number of Architects and Designers, finding a solution to combat the lack of natural light is critical.

Tunable white boards have the ability to imitate natural white light and the colour temperature changes that happen during the day. Ranging from 2700K replicating sunrise or sunset to 6500K like the middle of the day when the light is brightest, these boards, in conjunction with a DALI interface, can be programmed to slowly transition in colour temperature and output depending on the space applications and the users of the space.

Hospitals often program tunable white boards to follow the natural colour temperature rhythm of daylight and to dim down/up to mimic the changing light levels at sunrise and sunset. This has proved to have resulted in improved overall well-being in patients because their circadian rhythm is supported and their body is more easily able to achieve homeostasis so it can heal.

Often in office spaces, the requirements are different due to the application of the space and lower natural light levels. It’s common for the circadian rhythm to tell the users of this space to feel sleepy first thing in the morning and again at that well-known 3 pm slump. By tuning the boards to be brightest during these periods, the increase in light travels down your optic nerve and is registered by your hypothalamus, which sends a message to your body to increase alertness and therefore productivity.

Tuneable white boards have also become a more frequent inclusion in the education sector to promote student’s learning and minimise their lethargy at different times throughout the day.

When installed and programmed correctly, tunable white boards mixed with DALI dimming can have powerfully positive effects on the people who use your design.
