Cyanosis is a bluish discolouration of the skin due to poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood. The discolouration can occur on skin, lips, fingers, toes and mucous membranes.
Central Cyanosis is caused by diseases of the heart or lungs and occurs around the core, lips and tongue.
Peripheral Cyanosis occurs only at the extremities or fingers.
Initial diagnosis occurs from clinical observation. Although pulse oximeters are available to detect oxygen levels in blood, they are not used universally in operating rooms and recovery areas. Therefore, the ability of medical staff to reliably detect the onset of cyanosis becomes critical to the wellbeing of patients.
Appropriate lighting in hospital areas allows for accurate detection of Cyanosis in patients. It has been found that the most suitable light source should:
• Have appropriate intensity in the red part of the visible spectrum, where the spectral difference in oxygen levels in blood occurs. When the power is too low, a patient’s skin may appear darker and he or she may be falsely diagnosed to be cyanosed. When the power is too high, cyanosis may be masked and not diagnosed when it is present.

• Be within the range of 3200K and 5500K in CCT, higher will result in false diagnosis, and lower will result in failure to detect.

• Have a cyanosis observation index (COI) of not greater than 3.3, the lower, the better suited is the light source for visual detection of Cyanosis.
